Welcome back! As promised, here’s Part Two of my Mixed Media Canvases series! I can’t decide which of the canvases I like the most! But why choose just one?! I love them all, each for their own beauty and style! The style of this canvas is definitely vintage/feminine and a little shabby-chic! This time I began with an 8X10 hard canvas board, and coated it with a layer of tan craft paint. I then tore up some patterned papers and glued them down with Mod Podge. You can still see the striped piece toward the bottom and the vintage book page near the center top. Again, I forgot to get my camera set up in order to make a video and now I have to try and recall what on earth I did to make this! Yikes! I think that, after applying the torn pieces of paper, I just started using stencils and stamps to embellish the background. In this section I stamped out Tim Holtz’ Flower Garden blossoms and heat-embossed them with Brutus Monroe’s Coffee Grounds embossing powder. The butterfly ephemera was given to me by my crafty friend, Theresa! The sentiment is also by Tim Holtz and I heat-embossed it in white. I found the scroll-y die cuts in my stash, and added them with more Mod Podge, then smeared paint over them. In the center of the frame is another piece of ephemera from Theresa. I stamped and embossed Vintage Note from Stampendous over it. I love the white against the dark frame, don’t you? The larger white die-cut has a coat of Martha Stewart Pearl White craft paint, then some gray rubbed over it, and finally, another word stamp partially impressed onto it. I painted my blossoms with Gansai Tambi watercolors. Along the top and sides, I stamped Lace Borders from Stampendous, using Versafine Onyx Black ink, and added another stencil impression with pink paint. How about that lovely textured paper in this picture?! I didn’t really know it had that texture till I smeared paint and ink over it! I really like the dimension that the raised frame die-cut adds. I can’t wait to make some DIY gesso this weekend and add more texture and dimension to my next canvas! I’m sharing this canvas even though it’s not mixed media. I got a wild hair idea to pull out my alcohol inks and ended up making this instead! And I’ll write yet another post with more pictures to share the process for it! Thanks again for stopping by!
Happy Saturday, friends! It’s my day to share on the Brutus Monroe blog and we’ve had an exciting week with our recent reveal of the Unity Stamps and Brutus Monroe collaboration! I received the Hit The Brick background stamp and paired it today with Unity Stamps Hollyhocks! Above are pictured three panels which I created using the Brick background and Ranger’s Distress Resist Spray on watercolor card stock. The first panel had the most spray so left a smudgy impression but I kept stamping it out onto the next two panels and got a better impression with each one. You can be sure I’ll use them all, though! On the second panel, I sponged a layer of Zest Surface ink onto the center and then surrounded it with a layer of Sea Surface ink. Isn’t that textured brick background gorgeous?! Next I inked up Hollyhocks with black embossing ink, stamped it onto my panel then heat-embossed with black powder. I over-stamped another layer of the Hollyhocks with Iced Spruce distress oxide ink. My sentiment is from Unity Stamps Tess Girl set and I heat-embossed it in black directly to my card front. When I added the black embossing powder, bits of it stuck to my Iced Spruce Hollyhocks but I decided to leave the residue as it gave another cool textured element! I decided to trim down my panel with Stitched Oval dies, making a slightly larger black oval to frame my main panel, and then stamped the Hollyhocks again onto a white base card with the Iced Spruce oxide ink. I adhered all the pieces together and this is my finished card! I love how the two stamps, Hit The Brick and Hollyhocks paired so beautifully and the pop of Zest is so striking! I recently bought this stamp called Hollyhocks from Unity Stamps and inked it up the other day! I’m not in love with this card, but I AM in love with Brutus Monroe’s line of cardstock! To begin, I tapped out several colors of distress oxide inks (Broken China/Faded Jeans/Iced Spruce) onto my craft mat, spritzed them with water then blotted up the inks with Brutus Monroe’s Not Your Mama’s Ultra Heavy Base Weight card stock (now THAT’S a mouthful!) and was delighted at how well it took my watery inks! I then stamped the Hollyhocks onto the background with Wilted Violet oxide ink and then Iced Spruce.I created a little stencil using my Punchinella die and added the dots of Iced Spruce in a couple of places. I heat-embossed the Hollyhocks in black over the finished background and I love how they really stand out! I wanted to darken the edges so I sponged Brutus Monroe’s Sea Surface Ink around the edges, then trimmed my panel down and roughed up the sides with my scissors for a distressed look.But did I stop there?! Heck, no!! I then got out my new little pot of Brutus Monroe’s Unicorn Horn Glitter Glaze and smeared a little onto my craft mat, then tapped a dots-stamp into it and stamped it around my panel. I like the little sparkle it adds! I also recently received a lovely selection of Brutus Monroe’s card stock and chose to make my card base with Heather. I inked up Hollyhocks with Wilted Violet distress oxide then added some Sea Surface Ink, spritzed it with water and stamped right onto the card stock! I was impressed that it took the watery ink so well, with no buckling or warping! After attaching my distressed panel to the card base, I found this sentiment from the Super Sentimental set in my stash and placed it on with Thermoweb’s Sticky Strip Runner which doesn’t show through the vellum! A spattering of black paint added the final detail to my card!
