More Mixed Media Canvases!

2019-02-16 07.58.34
Welcome back! As promised, here’s Part Two of my Mixed Media Canvases series!  I can’t decide which of the canvases I like the most!  But why choose just one?!  I love them all, each for their own beauty and style!  The style of this canvas is definitely vintage/feminine and a little shabby-chic!  This time I began with an 8X10 hard canvas board, and coated it with a layer of tan craft paint.  I then tore up some patterned papers and glued them down with Mod Podge.  You can still see the striped piece toward the bottom and the vintage book page near the center top.

Again, I forgot to get my camera set up in order to make a video and now I have to try and recall what on earth I did to make this!  Yikes!  I think that, after applying the torn pieces of paper, I just started using stencils and stamps to embellish the background.  In this section I stamped out Tim Holtz’ Flower Garden blossoms and heat-embossed them with Brutus Monroe’s Coffee Grounds embossing powder.  The butterfly ephemera was given to me by my crafty friend, Theresa!  The sentiment is also by Tim Holtz and I heat-embossed it in white.

I found the scroll-y die cuts in my stash, and added them with more Mod Podge, then smeared paint over them.  In the center of the frame is another piece of ephemera from Theresa.  I stamped and embossed Vintage Note from Stampendous over it.  I love the white against the dark frame, don’t you?

The larger white die-cut has a coat of Martha Stewart Pearl White craft paint, then some gray rubbed over it, and finally, another word stamp partially impressed onto it.  I painted my blossoms with Gansai Tambi watercolors.

Along the top and sides, I stamped Lace Borders from Stampendous, using Versafine Onyx Black ink, and added another stencil impression with pink paint.  How about that lovely textured paper in this picture?!  I didn’t really know it had that texture till I smeared paint and ink over it!

I really like the dimension that the raised frame die-cut adds.  I can’t wait to make some DIY gesso this weekend and add more texture and dimension to my next canvas!

I’m sharing this canvas even though it’s not mixed media.  I got a wild hair idea to pull out my alcohol inks and ended up making this instead!  And I’ll write yet another post with more pictures to share the process for it!  Thanks again for stopping by!

Inky Ornaments

2018-10-11 15.14.11
I was totally inspired by the unbelievably beautiful ornament cards which my Instagram friend, Karen Janet from Little Blessings blog made recently; her cards took my breath away and I couldn’t wait to try making one myself!  Unfortunately, I don’t have any ornament dies so I had to make do with my Stitched Oval dies instead.  Let me share how I made my card!
2018-10-11 15.15.00
First of all, to create my ornaments, I used my alcohol inks on the back of a piece of Kirkland photo paper, letting the colors swirl and blend.  While the ink was still tacky, I pressed on a sheet of Gold Deco Foil which left behind the beautiful shimmery flecks!  When the ink was completely dry, I cut the shapes with Stitched Oval dies and set them aside to make my background!
2018-10-11 15.15.23
On a panel of black card stock, I heat-embossed in gold the pine branch from Stampin Up’s Ornamental Pine then the stars from their retired set, Winter Wishes.  Before I mounted this panel to a layer of textured gold paper, I punched a hole in the ovals so I could add some gold string.  I attached the larger ornament to the black panel with Thermoweb Sticky Tape Runner, then the smaller one with 3D Foam Squares from Thermoweb to lift it up.  The string was taped down on the back.

Lastly, I glued a gold sequin to cover the holes on both ornaments and added the sentiment in gold embossing.  I absolutely love Karen’s cards and am thrilled with how mine turned out as well!  I’ll be making more of these, you can be sure!

To Infinity…

2018-08-17 09.04.15
Welcome back to the blog!  I’m sharing another galaxy card because my good friend, Janice, just gave me the new Tim Holtz Alcohol Lift Ink and this is my first card using it!!  How cool is this stuff??!!  To create my card, I began with an alcohol ink print that I’ve had for a while and decided to see how the Lift Ink would work through a stencil!  If you look closely, you’ll see the bokeh effect which I made by using Brutus Monroe’s Paint Spots Mixed Media Stencil.  I laid it over my print then tapped a sponge dauber into the Lift Ink and pressed it into the stencil dots.  When all the dots were covered I removed the stencil, and first blotted the Lift Ink away then rubbed in a circular motion to remove any residue.  Voila!!  The Lift Ink indeed lifted the alcohol ink, leaving behind my soft bokeh!

I then pulled out my little stars stamp and inked it up with Lift and applied it in the same manner.  It didn’t show up very well after blotting and rubbing, so I stamped more stars and embossed them in silver.  You can see that the powder stuck to my inked background and despite my attempts to brush off the excess, some stayed behind and was embossed.  But I still think it’s pretty!

I had already die-cut the alcohol inked panel with Stitched Rectangle dies, so attached it to a panel of white, then to a black card base.  I stamped the sentiment from Neat & Tangled’s Celebrate You set onto a strip of white card stock, then attached it with two silver brads and made a little bend.

The Paint Spots stencil is so versatile and I love how this card turned out!  I’m also looking forward to playing with Lift Ink again!  Reach for the stars, friend and “create your own ending”!

Foiled Again!

2018-07-29 13.10.10 (1)
Welcome back!  This week’s Inspiration Team’s blog hop assignment was to create something other than a card using the new Brutus Monroe Deco Foils!  It took me a while to think on it and then remembered how beautifully foil adheres to alcohol ink while it’s still tacky!  So I got out my neglected inks and all the paraphernalia and went to town!  This particular photo doesn’t really show the accents of foil but don’t worry!  I’ll share lots more!
2018-07-29 13.11.40
This is an 8X8 inch glazed tile from Home Depot and to begin, I wiped it clean with a cotton ball dampened with 70% rubbing alcohol.  When it was dry, I went a little crazy with my inks!  I created a background which isn’t even visible, using some yellow and brown ink, blowing it around the tile with my air compressor.  I then just added drops of color, reds, orange, yellow, pinks, and white, moving each drop with the compressor before adding the next color and layer.  I love making flowers this way; I added some greens and a little brown alcohol ink to make the leaves.
2018-07-29 13.12.06
When I was satisfied with the overall design and the ink was not quite dry, I simply laid the Sunrise Foil Transfer Sheet onto my tile, rubbed it gently then pulled it back to reveal beautiful speckles and sparkles of foil!  I think it adds a really cool dimension to my design!
2018-07-29 13.12.26
The next step was to draw the petals and leaf lines around the patterns, creating more definite blossoms with a black and a white Posca paint pen.  That really made the flowers stand out!
2018-07-29 13.13.05
The center of my tile looked a bit empty so I decided to “break the rules”!  I don’t know if you’re supposed to heat-emboss on tile but I went for it!  I stamped the sentiment from Brutus Monroe’s Break The Rules stamp set directly onto my tile with white embossing ink and powder and heat-set it.  Unfortunately, it didn’t emboss as clearly as I wanted so I heat-embossed it again onto a square of vellum, punched it out with a scalloped circle punch then glued it directly over the sentiment I’d already added to the tile using Crystal Effects.
2018-07-29 13.14.26
You can really see the bits of Sunrise foil on this photo!  This was VERY messy (my arms and hands are covered with splatters of alcohol inks!) but so much fun!  I’m going to glaze my tile to seal in all the glorious color and gift it to someone!  I think it’d look great as a trivet or hanging on a wall, don’t you?!  Just wait until you see what Marie,  Berina and Waleska have done!

Penny Black Sweet Perfume

2018-03-26 15.42.27
This card is a first for me!  I heat-embossed Sweet Perfume by Penny Black onto the back of Kirkland photo paper, then colored it in using Ranger Alcohol Inks!  I made a video of the process but unfortunately, discovered that at some point I changed the setting to slow-motion so I can’t post it.  GAHHH!!  Anyway, this wasn’t the same as using water color paints, as the ink moved differently.  But I still enjoyed the process!  Instead of dropping ink directly onto the image, I painted with it.
2018-03-26 15.43.07
When I finished painting, I trimmed down the panel and adhered it to a layer of black card stock then to a base card of Stampin’ Up Crumb Cake card stock.  The sentiment is one of my favorites, made by Wplus9 in the Beautiful Bouquet-Ranunculus set.  I stamped it out with Versafine Onyx Black permanent ink onto a scrap of Bristol Smooth card stock, then lifted it with a strip of foam tape.  Two raspberry jewels accent the sentiment.
2018-03-26 15.42.50
The last thing I did was spatter a little white craft paint over the image.  I just really like to do that!  🙂

Altenew Charmed

2018-03-26 14.33.32
I absolutely love Charmed by Altenew!!  I love the squiggly lines that make up the image and I love to paint inside of them!  This card began with an alcohol print I’d made by pressing the back of a piece of Kirkland photo paper onto my ink-saturated surface!  I think it makes a beautiful background for this card; after stamping the image and a script stamp several times onto the paper with Versafine Onyx Black permanent ink, I set it aside to color my Scan N Cut image using Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers.
2018-03-26 14.33.39
After trimming the print down and adhering it to a layer of aqua card stock, I mounted the flowers with pieces of foam tape for lift.  I then die-cut the black leaf sprigs and tucked them beneath the blossoms.
2018-03-26 14.34.00
The last step was to attach the card to a black card base and photograph!!
2018-03-26 14.33.48
Hahaha!  I just noticed what appears to be finger prints in the lower left hand corner!!  How’s that for the “personal touch”??!!  😀
